At the coastal lagoon of Okarito Bay, the kotuku ( white herons) feed against a backdrop of Mt Cook /Aorangi and the Southern Alps. This is the only place they breed. The kotuku are the most sacred bird to Māori. If Māori call you Kotuku you are rare and beautiful.
