Alvin said: “This 19th century fishing waka has come to rest in sand dunes (at times, Māori hid their fishing waka from the enemy and retrieved them, if they could, when the coast was clear).

“A little reminder that there is a lot of our history to be found around our beaches, hills, caves, etc. Nature is gradually revealing her secrets. The wonderful thing about beaches after a good storm is the surprises. Sand dunes are gold mines, as the wind is constantly covering and revealing what they have been hiding. That is why all beachcombers love stormy weather.”
