I feel the spirits on every beach in New Zealand, our history is everywhere. The power for good is in the Maori culture and the unbelievable gifts they gave us. I see Paikea guiding Tiki back into the light. We really need our heroes to return.

TIKI
The great Maori warrior from Ngati Whakaue, Rotorua. The top warrior from each tribe fought each other. Tiki was the top warrior from Ngati Whakaue. He won all of his battles and lived to a great age. Tiki was carved in the early 1800's by Te Umanui. Now he is in the Auckland Museum.

PAIKEA
This was carved by Pine Taiapa in 1939. Paikea is an important ancestor of Ngati Porou. Alvin has placed Paikea here in the setting of Golden Bay, Nelson, where a huge pod of whales were saved last year.

WAKA TAUA
A waka taua is a large decorated war canoe. This one is from Manutuke in the Gisborne Region. It is attributed to the great tribal leader and carver Rakaruhi Rukupo of Rongowhakaata. It is in the Auckland Museum.
