Resurgence represented Aotearoa New Zealand in the 8th International Beijing Biennale 2019. Six paintings from over 5,000 artists from 113 countries were chosen for international representation of the Exhibition. Resurgence was one of the six.
About the painting: Pukaki was a famous 18th century warrior and Chief of the Ngāti Whakaue from Rotorua. The great carver Te Taupua carved Pukaki and his sons in the 1930s.
Paikea, from Hawaiiki, was saved by a whale after his half-brother tried to drown him in a power struggle. The whale took Paikea to safety in Aotearoa. Carved by Pine Taiapa in 1939 for Whitirea meeting house in Whangara, where Paikea settled. His descendants live throughout Aotearoa.
